Russia: Israeli Military Attack on Iran Will Be Big Mistake
MOSCOW - Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, warned on Monday that any military strike against Iran would be a big mistake with unpredictable consequences. Russia strongly opposes any military action against the Islamic Republic of Iran, although Moscow has supported UN sanctions against Iran over its nuclear program.
"There is no military solution to Iran nuclear issue because there is no military solution to other problems in the modern world," said Lavrov, who has served as foreign minister since 2004, when asked about reports that Israel was planning a military strike against Iran.
Lavrov said there would be no military resolution to the Iranian nuclear issue and said the conflict in neighboring Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan, has caused human suffering and the high number of casualties.
Lavrov added that the talks between Britain, China, France, Russia, the United States, Germany and Iran should be continued as soon as possible.
An attack on Iranian nuclear facilities would likely trigger retaliatory action Tehran became very disruptive in the Gulf that will decide the route of delivery and disrupt the flow of oil and gas to export markets, political analysts said.
Iran has been under four rounds of UN sanctions because of concerns about its nuclear program, which it says is entirely peaceful.
Earlier, the UN nuclear watchdog, the IAEA, expected this week published the most detailed reports on research in Iran. But the Security Council is not expected to impose stiff penalties as a result.
Israeli media has been full of speculation that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's cabinet to secure consensus to attack Iranian nuclear installations.
Senior Russian security official said there was no clear evidence that Iran is trying to make nuclear bombs.
